JenSop: The Singing Traveler!

Idealist. Dreamer. Singer. Explorer.

Post caroling season, my thoughts turn to travel….

So now that the caroling season is essentially over (just one more gig – New Year’s Eve at Longwood Gardens), my thoughts are looking forward to what’s next. (And also still feeling awesome about our 2nd appearance on the Rachael Ray Show!)

In my case, as many already know, it’s gearing up for a trip to Europe in February. I will be living in Europe for seven weeks pursuing auditions in Austria and Germany (and surrounding areas) to see what I might be able to accomplish. For those of you not in-the-know as to how things work in that regard, I’ll be sending my materials out to a bunch of agents before I head over, and hope to set up some auditions. There are absolutely no guarantees, and I’m going over with no advance preconceptions of what may or may not happen.

This kind of trip is something I’ve wanted to try for a long time, but always thought I couldn’t do it. However, as the years go by, you realize that you’re not getting any younger and you can’t keep putting off certain dreams until the non-existent “ideal time” comes along to go for them. So I’m giving it a shot. I’m one of those people that doesn’t want to have a whole bunch of regrets later in life when I look back…. this particular trip is just one of those things. In general, I like to think that’s how I want to live my life all the time – I’d rather put myself out there and get hurt or fail, than never try at all: career-wise and in my personal life.

Although these plans have kind of kept my personal life in a weird state of limbo, I’m at a point in my life where I am unattached, so I really can go where I want, when I want.

My first priority is to get my audition repertoire in good shape. After spending over a month singing nothing but Christmas carols every day, my voice is not in it’s tip-top opera form. I will spend the next six weeks working my butt off to get my rep ready to go.

I’m also going to start thinking of what places I’d like to visit while I’m not singing. The travel agent part of me can’t wait to explore different cities and countries, while I expand my knowledge to help others book awesome trips. Since I’ve been to Vienna twice already, living in Vienna for seven weeks will surely make me a top notch super expert in this particular area of Austria. And I can’t wait to just expand my knowledge of Europe in general! I’m going to explore and have the trip of a lifetime! And as a girly-girl who loves to plan, I’ve already started thinking about what outfits I might take – for auditions, exploring, social outings, etc….. and they all have to fit in my suitcase and carry-on!

As I said in a previous post, I will be posting regularly on this blog to update everyone on my adventures – from both the singing and travel perspectives. So.. stay tuned!

One of my favorite quotes is, "If your dreams don't scare you, they're not big enough." I guess I've been a dreamer all my life - I set my sights high and then I try to reach the sky. Some might call me a naive idealist, but that's just the way I am. I believe in always taking the high road, I believe in true love, and I believe in treating people the way you want to be treated. If you put good out into the world, good will come back to you! Being the dreamer that I am, I pursued singing as my primary life's calling - I've got two degrees in classical voice under my belt, and I sing just about anything under the sun. I also love a good adventure. Over the past few years, I've done quite a bit of world traveling, and have even lived abroad for stretches at a time: mostly in Vienna (Austria) and Croatia. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, and I became a travel agent who specializes in Disney vacations. (Seriously, I KNOW Disney - I've been going regularly since I was a little girl - and I LOVE it!) And with all my experience traveling and living in Europe, I'm becoming quite the specialist in that travel category as well. (And last year, I started working as a Tour Director in Central Europe!) As to the other juicy details of my life - I'm originally from Pennsylvania, I'm married to an awesome Croatian man named Miloš who is the BEST adventure partner a girl could ask for. (He's also an expert on knowing how to make me smile.) He's truly the love of my life! I've also had all kinds of other jobs along the way, besides singer and travel pro. (Which is pretty standard for those of us who went to school for music.) I've worked part time weekends as a Disney Princess look-alike for children's parties. I've been teaching for almost 20 years, and have lots of experience in retail and customer service. Oh, and I should also probably mention that I'm a huge Lord of the Rings/Star Trek nerd! :-) Let's all go along for an adventure, shall we?
